The Musée des Arts Décoratifs de l’Océan Indien (MADOI), a Musée de France accredited museum, is located in St Louis on a former farming estate: the Domaine de Maison Rouge. With over 300 years of history behind it, the Domaine de Maison Rouge is the last remaining coffee estate from the 18th century to have survived, with its unique layout. The owner’s house overlooks the estate’s various structural elements, such as the coffee-drying terraces, the stables, and various domestic and agricultural outbuildings. A coffee plantation of Bourbon Pointu (coffea arabica var. Laurina), spanning over a hectare, helps to explain the history of coffee in Bourbon. The old stables are now home to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de l’Océan Indien (Indian Ocean decorative arts museum), which boasts a wonderfully rich collection of furniture, textiles, porcelain, objets d’art and iconographies in high quality temporary, themed exhibitions with an educational aim. This collection illustrates the channels of exchange between the East and the West via clusters of Islamic, Persian, Hindu, African, Madagascan, Chinese and European civilisations, chiefly from the 16th to the 20th century, and explores how cultures, arts and manufacturing techniques in the Indian Ocean were shared and disseminated. Its collections have spawned a series of publications (portfolios, scientific catalogues and educational booklets) and tie-in products on sale in the museum shop. Pratical information: - As a Musée de France, the MADOI is responsible for the scientific supervision of Kélonia’s room 2, the sea turtle observatory. All items exhibited in room 2 are recorded on the MADOI’s inventory. - “Beau comme l’Antique, 1750-1815” exhibition: the exhibition room can be arranged to enable temporary closure, so that new works can be installed. - Ticket office closes at 5 pm. - Museum open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. NB: - Closed on 1 January, 1 May, 1 November and 25 December all day - Closes at 1.30pm on 24 and 31 December.
